What To Expect During an Immigration Exam
An immigration exam is a necessary step in the immigration process. It can seem intimidating, but much of the anxiety can often be alleviated by preparing properly and knowing what to expect. This review discusses the immigration exam process, highlighting precisely what one can expect during a visit.
Immigration exam: Here is what to expect
Immigration exams follow a relatively standard process. However, be sure to choose an experienced and approved medical provider for the exam. During the visit, one can expect the doctor to check the following items:
- Vaccination records
- Medical history
- Blood tests
- Physical exam
- Mental exam
Below is a more in-depth review of each stage of the immigration exam process. Every patient may have a slightly different experience, although the process is relatively the same for everyone so long as they choose a licensed provider.
Vaccinations
The Immigration and Nationality Act and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) require immigrants to receive certain vaccinations before they are admitted as a permanent resident. These vaccinations include:
- COVID-19
- Mumps, measles, and rubella
- Polio
- Tetanus
- Hepatitis B
- Rotavirus
This is far from an exhaustive list. Check the USCIS website for up-to-date information about which vaccines are needed before your immigration exam. During the exam, the doctor checks one's vaccine records to ensure all have been received. If not, then it may be required to schedule a time to receive them.
Medical history
The doctor also conducts a medical history review during an immigration exam. The patient may start by filling out one or several forms that provide more information about the patient's health, medications, and procedure history. In particular, the doctor seeks to determine if there are any details that may make the patient inadmissible or may be a cause of concern for the patient’s overall health and well-being. For example, if the doctor discovers that the patient is addicted to certain drugs, then it could make the patient inadmissible until they can prove that they are in remission.
Blood tests and chest X-ray
A complete blood count is ordered during the immigration exam. This is used to check for various diseases that would make the patient inadmissible or require further evaluation. Chest X-rays are also performed to ensure there are no underlying issues that need to be further evaluated.
Physical exam
A physical exam for immigration purposes is similar to a physical exam during a check-up visit with your primary physician. The doctor looks closely at the patient’s ears, nose, and throat, along with assessing the patient’s heart health (i.e. blood pressure, heart rate, etc.). A review of the patient’s lungs, lymph nodes, and abdomen occurs as well. Other checks may also be included during the physical exam.
Mental exam
A mental exam component of the exam as well. This is to ensure there are no mental disorders that may cause the immigrant to harm someone else. During this stage of the immigration exam, the physician may review the patient’s diagnosed mental disorders (if any). If there are any that are associated with potentially harmful behavior, then a deeper review with a mental health provider may be required.
Immigration exam FAQs
To help one further prepare, here are several common questions about immigration exams and answers from a licensed physician.
What do I need to bring to my immigration exam?
There are certain documents that one must bring when traveling to the exam. This list may vary based on the person's country of origin. However, in most cases, the patient must bring a valid passport, vaccination records, a list of medications, and doctor fees.
When do I schedule an immigration exam?
The National Visa Center (NVC) should tell each individual when to schedule their immigration exam. In general, an immigration exam must take place before the person goes to the immigration visa interview. Adjustment of status applicants will also need to complete an immigration exam in most cases.
Who do I visit for an immigration exam?
Individuals must visit a government-approved doctor for their immigration exam. It is important to only visit a government-approved doctor. Otherwise, the USCIS may not accept the exam results, and the entire appointment may have to be rescheduled (and repaid) for a new time.
