How To Cut Your Health Costs By Restoring The First Amendment and Legislation that will allow manufacturers to print actual health benefits on labels
The recently enacted ‘Health Care Reform’ legislation passed earlier this year will surely prove to be massively higher in cost than estimated at the time of passage. If you think that is not a given fact then you will maybe recall that Medicare was passed in 1965 with a projected cost for just the hospital portion of Part A at $ 9 billion dollars by the end of 1990. These were numbers provided by the House Ways and Means Committee and the actual costs were only $ 67 billion dollars, an increase of over 600 percent
Notwithstanding the above gloom and doom above, there is some very good news to share that legislation has recently been introduced into the House of Representatives that would simultaneously improve your own health and lower the cost of disease care. (after all, Health Care Reform isn’t about ‘health care’ but is actually about ‘disease care’).
This surprisingly good piece of legislation is the Free Speech About Science Act (HR 4913) which if enacted into law, would allow manufacturers and distributors to tell the truth about the benefits of food supplements, such as vitamins, minerals, and herbs.
Excellent examples are saw palmetto and its known benefit of treating the prostate, or cherry juice and its ability to treat gouty arthritis. Or red yeast rice which helps control high cholesterol.
Consumers are mostly kept in the dark about the potential benefits of foods and supplements, simply because current law makes it illegal for food and supplement producers to share this information.
HR 4913 will change all of that by protecting basic free speech rights and ending the censorship of science. It will also allow the natural health products community to share peer-reviewed scientific findings about natural health products with the public.
At first glance, this may not seem like such a major issue but if it does pass we will see huge benefits of educating the public about the real science behind natural health with information right on the label about which health benefits are in that particular supplement.
Logically this legislation provides that lying and false claims about supplements would remain illegal and subject to penalties however just imagine how much easier it would be to take care of your health if truthful information about the nutritional benefits of vitamins, minerals and herbs were readily available on a printed label.
Obviously the pharmaceutical industry (Big Pharma) and their allies at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be lobbying extensively against the re-affirmation of the First Amendment. However if we can restore freedom of speech about the health effects of supplemental products the sales should increase dramatically while the costs of all products should significantly decline.
To help insure the passage of HR 4913 it is critical that we all, including friends and family, take a couple of minutes contact our U.S. Senators and U.S Representatives by email, phone, letter, or fax.
By internet you can go to www.anh-usa.com and click on Campaigns and once there, you can send an e-mail of support with one click to both your Senator and Congressman. Otherwise you can find out the contact information for your state’s member of Congress by calling the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.
This may be the best opportunity ever to help restore the First Amendment and to easily improve your health with truthful information on product labels. To make that happen it is important to contact your members of Congress now, and often, until the Free Speech About Science Act (HR 4913) has become the law.
