Education and training

Dr. Gafanovich received her undergraduate degree from New York University and her medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine in 2002. She completed a residency in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, and was invited to stay on as a Hospital Care Attending Physician. After several years in hospital practice she joined a private practice in New York City, and in May 2008 she assumed sole responsibility for it.

She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and by the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons, and is affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan.

A practice with a history

The practice was founded in 1961 by Dr. Eric Cassell, known in New York City for four decades of expertise and personal attention to his patients. His successor held the same standard for another twenty years. The practice was then entrusted to Dr. Gafanovich, chosen for her skills in internal medicine and her commitment to the well-being of her patients.

That kind of continuity is rare in Manhattan, and it is the reason some families have been cared for in this office across three generations.

How we practice

The relationship comes first. Real healing depends on trust between patient and doctor. A visit here begins with a conversation, not a prescription pad.

A full history, not a list of symptoms. We take the time to understand the complaint, the medical and family history and the everyday circumstances around it — the biological, psychological and social factors that shape health.

Everything is explained. Patients often leave a doctor’s office unsure what they are taking, at what dose and for how long. Here you will hear the reasoning behind the diagnosis and the treatment, in plain language.

Prevention carries equal weight. We look for the cause as well as treating the symptoms, and use screening and vaccination to keep small problems from becoming large ones.

In short: we treat patients, not diseases.
