Comprehensive Annual Physical Exam on the Upper East Side

An annual physical is the one visit a year where nothing is urgent, and that is exactly why it matters. Dr. Marina Gafanovich, a board-certified internist on the Upper East Side, uses this time to review your health as a whole, catch problems early and agree with you on a plan for the year ahead.

Many of the tests are done right in our office on the day of your visit, so you leave with most of your checkup already complete.

Who should have an annual physical

Adults of any age benefit from a yearly checkup, even when they feel well. It is especially useful if you:

  • have a family history of heart disease, diabetes or cancer
  • take medication for a chronic condition such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • have not had blood work or a screening test in more than a year
  • are planning a major life change: a new job, pregnancy, intense training or long travel
  • simply want a clear picture of where your health stands

How the visit works

  1. Before the visit. When you book, we’ll tell you whether to fast. If you have results from other doctors, bring them or send them in advance.
  2. Conversation first. Dr. Gafanovich reviews your history, your concerns and your goals. There is time for questions.
  3. Examination and on-site tests. The physical exam, ECG, spirometry and other in-office tests are done in the same visit.
  4. Blood draw. Blood is drawn in the office and sent to the lab.
  5. Results and plan. When the results are ready, we contact you by phone and, if needed, schedule a follow-up to discuss them.

Frequently asked questions

Most insurance plans cover one preventive visit a year at no cost to you. Tests ordered for a specific problem may be billed separately. If you are unsure, call us with your plan details and we’ll help you check.

If a cholesterol panel or glucose test is planned, fast for 8–10 hours before the visit. You can drink water and take your usual medications unless the doctor tells you otherwise.

A physical is preventive: it looks at your overall health and screens for problems before they cause symptoms. An office visit deals with a specific complaint, such as a cough or back pain.

Plan for about 45–60 minutes, including in-office tests.

In-office tests such as ECG and spirometry are reviewed during the visit. Lab results usually take 2–5 business days.
