Type 2 diabetes develops slowly, often over years of insulin resistance and prediabetes. The earlier it is found, the more can be done — sometimes without medication at all. Dr. Marina Gafanovich diagnoses and manages prediabetes and type 2 diabetes on the Upper East Side.
Nutrition and activity. Practical changes that fit your routine and culture, not a one-size-fits-all diet.
Medication. Metformin and newer medications when needed, including GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide), which lower blood sugar and support weight loss. The doctor chooses the medication based on your health, other conditions and insurance coverage.
Protecting your heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves. Diabetes affects the whole body, so we also manage blood pressure and cholesterol, check your kidneys yearly and remind you about eye exams and foot care.
Regular monitoring. HbA1c every 3–6 months, with adjustments until you reach your goal.
Prediabetes means blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet diabetes. It is a signal, not a sentence: weight loss of 5–7% and regular activity can cut the risk of developing diabetes by more than half. We help you set up a plan and track progress.
Dr. Gafanovich has discussed insulin resistance on her Russian-language radio program on RadioUSA.
Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), with more than 20 years in practice.
Affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Dr. Gafanovich has led this Upper East Side practice since 2008; the practice was founded in 1961.
ECG, spirometry, urinalysis and blood draw in the same office, often during the same visit.
Unhurried visits, and every result is explained.
