Minor injuries are part of life: a twisted ankle, a bump on the head, a bee sting, a kitchen burn. Dr. Marina Gafanovich evaluates and treats non-emergency injuries in her Upper East Side office, and sees patients after car accidents under New York no-fault insurance.
After a car accident, symptoms such as neck pain, back pain or headache often appear hours or days later. A prompt medical evaluation protects your health and documents your injuries.
In New York, you generally must file a no-fault application with the insurer within 30 days of the accident, so don’t wait to get checked.
Sprains and strains. Ankle, wrist and knee sprains; muscle strains. Exam, advice on rest and rehabilitation, and X-ray referral when a fracture is possible.
Head injury and concussion. Evaluation after a minor head injury, concussion symptom management and guidance on returning to work, school or sports. Worsening headache, repeated vomiting, confusion or drowsiness needs the ER.
Eye injuries. Minor scratches, irritation from a foreign body, chemical splash after first rinsing. We refer to an ophthalmologist when needed.
Neck and back pain after lifting, falls or sports.
Insect bites and stings. Local reactions, infected bites, tick bites and Lyme disease prevention. Swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing after a sting is an emergency — call 911.
Rashes and burns. Minor burns, sunburn, contact dermatitis and allergic rashes. See also Skin Conditions.
Cuts and wounds. Wound care and tetanus shot if you are due.

Yes, it’s a good idea even if you feel fine. Some injuries show up later, and early documentation matters for a no-fault claim.
In most cases, your own car insurance pays under the no-fault system, regardless of who caused the accident. Bring your claim information to the visit.
If your last tetanus shot was more than 5–10 years ago, depending on the wound. We can give it in the office.
