High cholesterol has no symptoms, yet it is one of the main causes of heart attacks and strokes. A simple blood test shows where you stand. Dr. Marina Gafanovich evaluates your cholesterol together with your overall heart risk and recommends treatment only when it makes sense for you.
Numbers alone don’t decide treatment. We look at your age, blood pressure, smoking, diabetes and family history to estimate your 10-year risk of heart disease and set a target that fits you.
Lifestyle. Food choices, activity and weight management can lower LDL and triglycerides.
Medication. Statins are the most studied and effective medicines for lowering cholesterol and heart risk. For patients who can’t take statins or need more, other options are available.
Follow-up. A repeat lipid panel 6–12 weeks after starting or changing medication, then once or twice a year.
Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), with more than 20 years in practice.
Affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Dr. Gafanovich has led this Upper East Side practice since 2008; the practice was founded in 1961.
ECG, spirometry, urinalysis and blood draw in the same office, often during the same visit.
Unhurried visits, and every result is explained.

Not always. A non-fasting test is fine for many people. If your triglycerides are high, the doctor may ask for a fasting test.
Adults should have a cholesterol test at least every 4–6 years, and more often after 40 or if you have risk factors.
For most people, yes. Muscle aches are the most common side effect and can often be managed by changing the dose or medicine.
