Medical Care for Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are serious medical conditions, not a matter of willpower. They affect the heart, bones, hormones and digestion, and they are treatable. Dr. Marina Gafanovich provides private, non-judgmental medical care for people with eating disorders and works as part of their treatment team.

What the primary care doctor does

Eating disorders are best treated by a team: a therapist, a dietitian and a medical doctor. Our role is the medical side of recovery:

  • Evaluation: history, physical exam, heart rate and blood pressure, weight in a way that feels safe for you
  • Tests: blood work for electrolytes, blood count, kidney and liver function, thyroid; ECG in the office
  • Medical monitoring during recovery, including early signs of complications
  • Bone health, menstrual and hormone issues related to low weight
  • Coordination with your therapist, dietitian or psychiatrist, and referral to specialized programs when a higher level of care is needed

We don’t comment on appearance, and you can ask not to see your weight.

When to seek care

Talk to a doctor if you or someone you love:

  • is losing weight quickly or is afraid to eat
  • makes themselves vomit or uses laxatives to control weight
  • often eats large amounts of food and feels out of control
  • feels dizzy, faint, cold or tired all the time
  • has stopped having periods

Fainting, chest pain, a very slow or irregular heartbeat, or confusion needs emergency care — call 911.

Support outside the office

  • National Alliance for Eating Disorders helpline: (866) 662-1235
  • If you are in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline)
